Serves: One 9 inch cake
This professional looking cake is so easy to make, it is unbelievable. I had made this for a surprise birthday party of a friend who just loves teddies. Needless to say it was a huge hit! This cake will definitely bag u lots of appraisal.
INGREDIENTS:
The cake:
4.5 cups flour
12 eggs
300gm butter
4.5 cups powdered sugar
6tsp vanilla essence
1.5 cup cocoa powder
4.5tsp baking powder
The sugar syrup:
1cup sugar
2cups water
1 sachet of coffee
The icing:
1L of DELIGHT heavy whipping cream (Or any brand)
Blue food colour
Grass nozzle
6-8 Kebab sticks
2 big round biscuits
Optional:
White and black fondant
METHOD:
- Cream the butter and sugar until they are fluffy. Add the eggs are beat very well till the mixture is airy.
- Add your sifted flour, baking powder and cocoa powder and combine well. Add the vanilla essence and mix well. Your cake mix is ready.
- Take two cups of this mix and put it in a small greased oval microwave safe bowl. Bake at 60%(med high) power for 8mins. Everybody’s microwave is different, so keep checking with a toothpick after 6mins. The tooth pick should come out with very little bits of cake.
- Repeat the above step. So now you have two small hemispherical cakes. Divide the remaining batter into three equal parts, keeping half a cup of batter aside.
- Take 1/3rd of the batter and bake in a big cylindrical grassed microwave safe container, at 60% power for about 13mins. Keep checking.
- Find an oval microwave safe bowl larger than the first bowl but smaller than the cylindrical container. Grease it well and bake the remaining cake batter half at a time (at 60% power for 10mins), so as to get two big hemispherical cakes.
- Make a small cupcake out of the 0.5 cup of batter you had kept aside. It will take around 2mins a 60% power.
- To make the sugar syrup boil all the ingredients together until well combined.
- Cut the cylindrical cake in half horizontally and spray every piece of cake with the sugar syrup.
- Whip your cream till stiff peaks and add blue food colour to get your desired shade of blue. The icing is now ready. Pour it into a piping bag fitted with a grass nozzle.
- Take your bigger hemispherical cake, which will be the base. Add some icing. Place one half of the cylindrical cake cut in a way so that their borders match. Add some more icing and then add the second big hemispherical cake. The body is done.
- Place the small hemispherical cake followed by icing then the other small hemispherical cake. Now pierce four kebab sticks from the head to the bottom for support.
- To make the legs and arms cut the remaining half of the cylindrical cake and do so. To stick the hands in the proper place you will need more kebab sticks.
- Make cuts around the front face and chest and shape the cake into a teddy like shape.
- Cut sectors out of the biscuits to make the ears.
- Crumb coat the cake (add a thin layer of icing) and freeze for 5mins.
- Now use your grass nozzle to make the fur like icing. Just push out the icing and pull away to get the fur like effect. Practise few times, it’s not difficult.
- I used cake to make the eyes and nose, which doesn’t look very clean, you can make this with fondant if you wish.
- After you are finished making the fur add the cupcake to the teddy’s lap. Your teddy cake is complete.
