The Importance of Crumb Coating
Icing a cake becomes increasingly difficult if you don’t use this tip. A crumb coat is basically a protective layer of frosting which seals the crumbs inside the cake so that when the final layer of frosting is added, none of the cake or cake crumbs show.
In order to crumb coat a cake, you need to first stack your layers in order with frosting in between each layer. Once that is done, take some frosting and just cover the entire cake with it. It doesn’t need to be neat or clean or even. You just need to cover every inch of the cake with the frosting. After covering the entire cake, you need to chill it for about 30-45 minutes so that the frosting sets and doesn’t come off once you start the final frosting.
The next post will be on how to ice a cake and get smooth edges and sides. Keep reading!
