As a child, the edible roses on top of cakes really fascinated me. Growing up, I developed a dislike for fondant and was more taken up with buttercream and other kinds of frosting. These roses look like a work of art and here are a few tips on how to pipe a beautiful buttercream rose.
You require two particular pieces of equipment.
1. Teardrop shaped nozzle
2. Piping nail

It is difficult to get a proper rose without the latter and impossible without the former.
You need to hold the piping bag such that the wider end of the nozzle is at the bottom.

Pipe a cone at the centre of the nail. Increase the height if you want a larger rose.
Pipe petals around the cone in concentric circles, increasing in number each time.
Once you are satisfied with the rose, take a pair of scissors and snip it off from the bottom where it is attached to the nail and then gently slide it on to the cake/cupcake you are decorating.
Remember, the best part about buttercream is that if you mess up, you can start over.
