Filling piping bags is a tricky business. It can get messy and air pockets in the bag can damage your piping pattern. So here are a few tips on how to fill your piping bag properly.
1. Roll down the sides of your piping bag and use your left hand (if you are right handed) as a holder.

2. Take a small amount of icing and carefully place it inside the bag.
3. Extend the rolled up piping bag a little at a time and keep filling it with icing.
4. Remember not to overfill the bag. The ideal amount is about ¾ of the bag.
5. Once that has been done, take a pair of scissors and snip off a bit of the bag’s tail according to what size of icing you want to pipe out

6. Take a scraper and scrape the icing down towards the tip. This way, any air pockets that might have formed will be pushed out.
7. In case you want to use a particular nozzle, first snip off the tail of the piping bag so that the nozzle fits and then go through these steps, excluding #5.
