Prep time: 20 min
Resting time for yeast to work: 30-40 min
Baking time: 5 to 10 min
Serves: 3 pizza bases
Everyone loves pizza! But we often buy readymade pizza bases to save time. Scratch made pizza bases are more light and fresh and it isn’t much of a pain if you follow the recipe step by step. There are different pizza base recipes out there but I’ve found this the most simple to follow. It requires as less as 6 ingredients and makes about 3 pizza bases. The extra pizza bases can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
INGREDIENTS:
1. 375 ml warm water
2. 2 tsp dry yeast
3. Pinch of sugar
4. 600 g plain flour (plus extra in case the dough is too wet and for shaping)
5. 1 tsp salt
6. 60 ml olive oil
METHOD:
1. Add water, yeast and sugar in a small bowl and keep aside for about 5 minutes or until the mixture is foamy.
2. Combine salt and flour in a bowl and dig out a hole in the centre to add the yeast mixture and extra virgin olive oil.
3. Mix it until well combined and use your hands to bring the dough together into a round shape. If the mixture is too wet, add more flour.
4. Knead for about 10 minutes or until it is smooth and elastic.
5. Place it in a bowl brushed lightly with olive oil. Cover with plastic wrap (I used cling flim) and set aside for 30 minutes or until the dough doubles in size.
6. Remove the dough to a flour- dusted surface and knead it with your hands.
7. Divide the dough up into as many little balls as you want to make pizzas- this is enough to make about 3 medium sized pizza bases of 6 inches each.
8. Roll them into circles of about ½ cm in thickness.
9. Prick each circle about with a fork. Bake in a preheated oven at 150 degree Centigrade for 5 to 10 minutes.
TIPS: Do not worry if the pizza base doesn't seem baked enough. Remember, you will be adding your toppings and baking it again in the oven!
